Neighbourhood Rink Volunteer
Neighbourhood Rink Volunteers support the maintenance and operations of community outdoor rinks during the winter season. This position plays a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable space for residents of all ages to skate and socialize. Volunteers work closely with City staff and fellow community members to help sustain the rink throughout the season.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend and participate in volunteer and equipment annual required training sessions provided by the City and follow all safety protocols and guidelines
- Set up rinks at the beginning of the season using approved rink board materials and only in designated park locations, support rink opening and closing procedures as scheduled
- Assist with regular ice maintenance (e.g., snow removal, flooding support, edge clean-up)
- Monitor rink conditions and report any safety concerns or maintenance needs to City staff by conducting daily safety inspections using online checklists provided and documentation.
- Flood rinks in accordance with the City’s rink maintenance manual and guidelines.
- Shovel snow from rink surfaces and emergency exits as needed to maintain skateable conditions and emergency access.
- Help maintain a clean and safe environment around the rink area.
- Engage positively with community members and model safe skating behaviour.
- Help communicate updates (e.g., rink closures due to weather) to residents when needed through the signage provided
Qualifications
- Enthusiastic about community involvement and outdoor winter activities
- Police check with vulnerable sectors
- Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of winter conditions
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or as part of a team
- Physical ability to perform light manual tasks such as shoveling snow
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience with outdoor rinks or skating is an asset but not required
- Must be 16 years of age or older (children under the age of thirteen (13) may volunteer if accompanied by an adult for a City approved activity, with a letter of signed consent from a parent or legal guardian.
