Fitness Instructor

Position Summary:

Fitness instructors should continually strive to provide programs that are safe, effective, multi-leveled and enjoyable for all participants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keeps certifications current and provided copies to Fitness and Lifestyle Coordinator.
  •  Prepare and instruct a safe, effective and balanced fitness program within your trainings scope of practice.  
  • Class must include a warmup phase, extended for special populations and cool down phase.
  • All group physical activity programs should closely adhere to the following fundamental principles of exercise: overload, progressive resistance, specificity.
  •  Record class numbers on weekly time sheet and communicate to Fitness and Lifestyle Coordinator any participant attendance concerns.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork including incident reports, times sheets with class statistics and maintenance forms.
  •  Arrange for a qualified replacement if unable to teach class and notify Fitness & Lifestyle Coordinator
  • Always conduct self in a professional manner.
  •  Provides only professional and appropriate music for classes.
  •  Follow class description and do not make major changes such as changing class location or moving a class outside without approval by Fitness Coordinator
  • Personal items must be stored in the change rooms.  Staff and participants are encouraged to use the lockers for day use only
  • Only use class appropriate equipment and equipment purchased by the Fitness department
  • Monitor supplies for damages, report any hazards or damages equipment.
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes before your fitness program to set up equipment, the stereo, and meet and greet participants. Ask participants if they have any health concerns or questions before class that they would like you to know about.
  • Injuries to staff or participants must be reported immediately.
  • Monitor own intensity level and remain well hydrated
  • Never contact members/non-members electronically that are not currently working with you.
  • Any photos of participants must have the client photo waiver completed.
  • Instruct a safe, effective and balanced program that has multi-levels. Keep in mind – your safety, enthusiasm and communication. Have fun!
  • Contact Front desk staff for assistance in case of emergencies
  • Ensure all fitness equipment is put away after class and aqua fitness matt is hung to dry
  • Complies with the Privacy Protection Act and does not leave class lists or other confidential information in public view.  All confidential information must be kept in a secure, locked location.
  • Ensure key tag and photo is set up to access the fitness centre. Never give your key tag to some one else to use.
  • Encourage participants to put all equipment away, spray and wipe down all equipment used.
  • Aqua fitness instructors should not use handrails to demonstrate suspended moves
  • Be aware of environment by asking lifeguards air temperature, humidity levels and pool water temperature and alter your class accordingly.
  • Dress appropriate in clothing that allows sweat to evaporate.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 18 years or older.
  • Friendly, approachable, and able to interact positively with diverse community members.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to listen and respond effectively.
  • Basic problem-solving skills and the ability to follow instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Comfortable performing light physical tasks (e.g., standing for extended periods, lifting light items).
  • Experience volunteering or working at public events is an asset but not required.
  • Duties as assigned.
  • Vulnerable Sector Screening Check and/or Criminal Record Check may be required depending on the nature of the event.
