The City of Peterborough is hiring Seasonal Operators to join our Public Works crews for the season. This hands-on role is ideal for licensed operators who enjoy operating equipment, working outdoors, and being part of a skilled team completing a wide range of construction and maintenance work across the city.
Seasonal Operators support multiple crews and projects, spend their days out in neighborhoods and public spaces, and operate City vehicles and equipment while working safely around the public as a representative of the city.
What You’ll Do
Reporting to the Working Foreman and Public Works Supervisors, you will carry out a variety of operational duties, including:
- Operating one-person sanitation trucks
- Sidewalk, curb, and gutter construction and restoration
- Supporting road and surface maintenance activities
- Working safely and professionally in active public spaces
Please note: This position involves shift work, including days, weekends, and nights, and requires working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Contract dates: approximately April 7 to November 27, 2026
Qualifications
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent)
- Minimum 12 months of labour, operator, or construction experience, including experience operating DZ-class vehicles and familiarity with proper work procedures
- Valid Ontario Class D license with Z endorsement and a clear driver’s abstract
- Understanding of safe work practices and ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Training in Traffic Control Book 7, WHMIS, and First Aid/CPR/AED are considered assets
- Satisfactory Police Criminal Record Check
- The position is physically demanding and requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- A Functional Abilities Test will be completed prior to the start date and must be successfully passed
Additional Information
- Completion of all pre-employment requirements (driver’s abstract, police check, and functional abilities assessment) is required prior to the start date.
- Returning seasonal employees must re-apply to be considered; however, they are not required to re-interview.
Salary
$28.98/hour
