Job Details

The Public Works (PW) Inspector I helps the City keep its municipal infrastructure safe, reliable, and in good working order by completing baseline inspections of roads, sidewalks, bridges, signs, culverts, and related assets. The role supports the City’s responsibility to meet provincial and municipal standards, contributes to public safety, and ensures service levels reflect Council priorities and community expectations. By documenting conditions with care and accuracy, the Inspector I provides information that guides maintenance decisions, supports compliance, and helps the City manage operational risk. 

The Inspector I contributes to the effectiveness of Public Works teams by sharing practical field insights, offering clear information to crews, and helping others understand inspection findings and safety considerations. The role models professional, respectful interactions with residents, contractors, and colleagues, helping reinforce trust in City services. Although not a supervisory position, the Inspector I influences day-to-day work quality by providing reliable information, demonstrating sound judgement, and supporting a coordinated, safetyfocused approach to maintenance activities. 

Qualifications

Completion of a two year Civil Engineering Technician (CET) diploma or equivalent.  

C.Tech designation, or eligibility and active pursuit. 

Valid Class G driver’s licence and ability to operate City vehicles. 

Experience 

Cumulative Experience: 1 to 2 years of relevant experience in areas such as civil infrastructure inspection, road or sidewalk maintenance, construction, or municipal field operations, providing a practical foundation for understanding asset conditions and service expectations. 

Job-Specific Experience: Up to 1 year of applied experience using civil drawings, field plans, maps, and digital tools (including inspection software, workorder systems, or GIS), gained through previous employment, coop placements, or fieldbased training. 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Experience in municipal public works or transportation infrastructure. 
  • Training or exposure to material testing, drainage assessment, or roadway construction practices. 
  • Experience in data management, workflow systems, or field inspection technology.  

Technical Skills  

Legislative & Regulatory Knowledge – Understands how the Minimum Maintenance Standards, Highway Traffic Act requirements, and municipal maintenance policies apply in the field, and uses this knowledge to spot conditions that may affect safety, service levels, or required followup.  

System Proficiency - Uses mobile inspection tools, GIS maps, and the workorder system to capture field information accurately, locate assets, and ensure crews receive clear, usable details for maintenance work.  

Data & Information Management - Enters inspection findings, photos, and location details into digital systems in a clear and consistent way so records remain accurate, traceable, and reliable for planning or claims review.  

Project & Process Coordination - Helps keep inspection tasks moving smoothly by organizing information, aligning field work with daily priorities, and communicating changes that support steady workflow across the team.  

Professional & Interpersonal Skills - Communicates respectfully and clearly with residents, contractors, and colleagues, applying sound judgement when explaining conditions, answering questions, or addressing concerns.
