Municipal Zoo Veterinarian

Position Description

The Municipal Zoo Veterinarian is responsible for providing proactive and responsive medical care for a diverse collection of exotic, domestic, and native wildlife species at the Riverview Park & Zoo. This role leads preventative health programs, diagnostics, surgical procedures, and emergency response, ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation and accreditation standards. 

As one of two part-time veterinary professionals on staff, the Municipal Zoo Veterinarian collaborates closely with animal care teams, provides technical guidance, supports staff training, and contributes to enrichment and welfare initiatives. The position also plays a key role in maintaining biosecurity protocols, accurate medical records, and supporting accreditation with Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA). 

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver clinical care, including examinations, surgeries, and treatments.
  • Develop and implement preventative health and welfare programs.
  • Respond to emergencies and participate in on-call rotation.
  • Support staff training and foster a collaborative animal care environment.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. 

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Ontario.
  • Minimum of three years clinical experience.
  • Experience in zoo or exotic animal medicine preferred.
  • Strong diagnostic, surgical, and communication skills.

Hourly Wage: $61.83 per hour (2026 rate)
