Every day, our Transit staff help people get to work, school, appointments, and home safely. They are often the first point of contact for customers and play a key role in keeping Peterborough connected.

No prior transit experience required. We provide paid training.
What You'll Do
As an Extra Board Operator, you’ll:
- Safely operate fully accessible transit buses and paratransit vehicles
- Assist customers with mobility needs
- Provide route, schedule, and fare information
- Represent the City with professionalism, respect, and care
- Work independently while supporting a strong team environment
Work Schedule & Availability:
- This role involves a variety of shifts, including days, nights, weekends, split shifts, statutory holidays, and short-notice work.
- A guaranteed minimum of 25 hours/week, assigned work up to a 44 hours/week; maximum of 60 hours (ATU regulations)
- One assigned day off per week Irregular shifts, including days, nights, weekends, split shifts, statutory holidays, and short-notice call-ins
- Shifts can potentially span up to 11 hours which may include up to 5 consecutive hours before a break (e.g., 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
- Potentially required availability on all holidays except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day (only two days Transit doesn’t operate)
Who We Are Looking For:

You may be a great fit if you:
- Are 18 years or older
- Have strong communication and customer-service skills
- Enjoy working with people and supporting the community
- Are open to learning in a fast-paced, changing environment
- Can follow policies, procedures, and safety requirements
- Hold a valid Ontario driver’s license
You’ll also need to be able to provide:
- A clear driver’s abstract
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector
- A Functional Abilities Test arranged by the City of Peterborough with a local physiotherapist
Assets (not required):
- First Aid / CPR / AED
- Class B or C license with Z (Air Brake) endorsement
Training & Career Pathway:
Here’s how it works:
- Start Part-Time
- Begin at 25 hours per week (up to 44 hours)
- Paid training provided (training rate applies)
- Licensing Support
- Complete the written Class C test
- Obtain a commercial medical through your doctor
- Book your Ministry road test
- We provide in-house training for your Class C license
- You will need to:
- Air Brake “Z” endorsement training is scheduled and supported
- Move to Full-Time
- Transition to full-time hours, wage progression and working conditions are clearly outlined in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
- Extra Board Operators are members of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1320 and transition to full time Driver positions in order of seniority, at which time group health benefits and pension are provided.
Pay Rates
- Training wage: $23.72/hour (paid training)
- Extra Board Operator wage: $27.11/hour
- Full-Time Transit Operator wage: $33.88/hour
Note: These rates are set by the union and are non-negotiable.
