Laboratory

The City of Peterborough, Environmental Protection Division Laboratory assists in the production of clean drinking water by providing lab analysis in support of regional, provincial and federal legislation.

Our lab is an ISO 17025 certified lab. It's accredited by the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation (CALA). The lab is accredited by CALA for specific types of water testing.

Our lab is licensed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment for drinking water testing including testing for O. Reg. 170/03, O. Reg. 319/08, and O. Reg. 243/07.

Location and hours of operation

The laboratory is located at 425 Kennedy Rd. in Peterborough, Ontario.

We are open:

Monday to Thursday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

How to submit a water sample to our lab

What do I need to submit a sample?

You need a collection bottle and a Chain of Custody form.

The Environmental Protection Laboratory provides collection bottles. Samples must be submitted in lab-provided bottles which can be picked up at 425 Kennedy Rd. during business hours.
A lab-specific Chain of Custody must be completed to submit with your sample. Email ESLab@peterborough.ca for sampling instructions and a blank Chain of Custody form as a first-time client.

Dropping off your sample

Samples must be dropped off at the Environmental Protection Laboratory during business hours.
Water samples must be submitted to the lab as soon as possible after collection (maximum 24 hours after collection).
Samples should be kept cool, not frozen when transported to the laboratory. Preferably use a cooler with ice packs.
Samples can be shipped to the laboratory, ensuring all requirements are met. Contact the lab using ESLab@peterborough.ca for further instructions.
