Municipal Addressing

Having a clear and consistent address system helps everyone — from emergency responders finding your home in a crisis to service providers delivering utilities and local services.

Our goal is to make sure every building and occupied unit has its own unique address that’s easy to find and identify. A consistent addressing system keeps our community safe, connected, and running smoothly. Municipalities are responsible for keeping these addresses accurate and up to date.

It's not just a number: It can save your life

To obtain an address or request an address change, please contact the Geomatics and Mapping Team by email (gis@peterborough.ca)or by phone at 705-742-7777 ext. 1678.

  • Requests for a change of address related to 9-1-1 standards are completed free of charge.
  • Requests for a change of address not related to 9-1-1 standards are subject to a $60 fee.

About the Municipal Addressing By-Law

The Municipal Addressing By-Law (25-117) outlines how addresses are assigned, displayed, and maintained across the City. It helps make sure every property can be easily located by emergency services, visitors, and service providers.

The By-Law covers topics such as:
  • How municipal numbers are assigned and displayed
  • Standards for clear and visible address signs
  • General rules and responsibilities for property owners
  • Administrative procedures and penalties
The City is responsible for assigning and confirming municipal addresses. Property owners are responsible for posting their address number(s) clearly on each building or unit, following the standards in the By-Law.
