Urban Forestry Technician - Summer/Fall Student

Make a Difference in Your Community – One Tree at a Time!

Join the City of Peterborough as an Urban Forestry Technician Summer/Fall Student and help grow and protect our urban forest. In this hands-on role, you’ll support a variety of forestry programs —from tree planting inspections ensuring conformance with City standards, tree inventories in parks and along road allowances and support community tree planting events. 

You’ll also assist with projects tied to our Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan and help educate the public on the value of trees and our urban canopy. If you’re passionate about the environment and want to gain real-world experience in the field of urban forestry, we want to hear from you!

This is a three-month Temporary Contract; 35 hours per week
(August 2025 to October 2025 w/ possibility to extend to 5 months)

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in post-secondary education in Forestry, Urban Forestry, or a related field.

Experience with:

  • Tree inventory and tree species identification
  • GIS databases and ArcPro
  • Understanding of municipal tree by-laws
  • Records management

Proficient in computer use, including Microsoft Excel and Word.

Comfortable interacting with the public and participating in public education and outreach activities, responding to public inquiries and complaints related to trees.

Able to:

  • Work outdoors in various site conditions and inclement weather
  • Perform physical tasks related to the role
  • Travel to different locations—must have daily access to reliable transportation
  • Provide customer service in responding to phone calls and emails

Hourly Rate:  $21.00/ hour
