Manager, Government Relations & Corporate Strategy

Job Details

Reporting to the CAO, the Manager, Government Relations and Corporate Strategy role contributes to the development and implementation of government relations initiatives to support the Mayor & Council, Chief Administrative Officer, and the Corporate Leadership Team. Establishes linkages for the City of Peterborough with opportunities arising from all orders of Government (local, regional, provincial, federal) in efforts to identify opportunities and advance the strategic priorities of the City. This position will support activities related to policy, communications, government engagement, and advocacy more broadly. Ensure that the organization remains competitive, efficient, and aligned with its long-term goals. 

Qualifications

Requires an individual who has a post-secondary degree or diploma in Political Science, Public Administration, Business, or a suitable equivalent. Formal post-graduate training in public administration, public policy, or another professional designation is an asset. A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in government relations, public relations, and stakeholder management, preferably in the public sector, is essential. The candidate must have proven experience in government relations, public policy development, and strategy. 

The role demands expertise in government relations, including a deep understanding of the political landscape, legislative processes, and public policy. The individual should possess strong leadership and team-building skills to effectively manage and mentor staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment. Strategic and financial acumen is necessary to develop and implement strategies that align with the City's long-term goals and manage budgets effectively. 

The candidate must be proficient in reporting and analysis, capable of conducting thorough research, interpreting data, and providing insightful recommendations.  

Excellent communication and relationship-building skills are required to engage with various stakeholders, including elected officials, government agencies, and community organizations. The role also requires strong interpersonal and problem-solving abilities to navigate complex issues and find effective solutions. 

Innovation and adaptability are crucial, as the individual must be able to anticipate trends, embrace change, and implement best practices. Technical proficiency in using relevant software applications for research, analysis, and communication is essential.  

The candidate should have strong presentation skills to effectively convey information to senior management, Council, and other stakeholders. Additionally, the role involves logistical coordination, including organizing meetings, preparing briefing notes, and managing project timelines. 

Requires a valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle to fulfill the requirements of the position. Must be able to work extended hours to attend evening meetings, as required.
