Water main leaks and breaks
Water mains typically leak or break more often in winter months. Cold weather causes movement in the soil due to freezing/frost penetration, which creates increased forces and point loading on water mains. Other causes of water main leaks and breaks include internal and/or external corrosion.
The Peterborough water distribution system typically experiences between 20-30 water main breaks each year.
Repairing water mains
We will determine where on the pipe the problem occurred, the severity of the leak and will obtain emergency locates. We will then excavate to locate the leak and a clamp will be used to fix a smaller hole if suitable or we will replace the section of failed pipe.
This break information placed into our asset management program to assist in determining future water main rehabilitation or replacement programs.
Protecting drinking water during a water main break
We follow the current Ontario water main disinfection procedure. Positive pressure is maintained during a water main break to ensure foreign material does not enter the pipe. Once the pipe is clear of surrounding soil/debris and fully exposed the water pressure is reduced so the repair can be completed.
