Landlords and Owners

Service to help when tenants move in and out

Water Services provides the following service to help property management companies and landlords manage the utility services (water/sewer and rental) when tenants move in and out.

Year-round service

By signing an year-round application for service, landlords and property managers authorize the City of Peterborough Water Services to automatically transfer responsibility for the rental unit services to them when a tenant moves out. This ensures the water and rental equipment remain in service at the property if there has been no application for service. If the property is managed by a third party the water and rental services are transferred into the owner's name.

Under this program, the account set-up fees are waived for landlords and property managers. We will notify the landlord or property manager by mail confirming the tenant has closed their account and that the service has been transferred to their name.

When we receive a move-in request for a new tenant, we will transfer the account from the landlord or property manager to the new tenant. The new tenant will be responsible for one time set up fees.

If you are interested in this program, please complete the year-round service application form. The owner of the property is the only person authorized to sign this form. If the property owner wishes to authorize a second person to sign this form, this must be indicated when the form is signed.

Holdbacks

A holdback request is completed by a lawyer for the vendor or purchaser of a property. It is a dollar amount that will be withheld from the vendor to cover any water and sewer arrears that may be owed on the property as of the closing date.

To request a holdback, please submit by mail a written request from the law office, along with a cheque for $15.00 plus HST. The written request must include the service address, closing date, vendor and purchaser information.

Upon receipt, we will provide a letter outlining any water/sewer arrears, a suggested holdback amount, and whether a rental hot water tank is present at the location.

If you have any questions, please contact our Customer Service department at 705-748-6900.
