The City of Peterborough offers a Tax Assistance program for property owners with low or fixed incomes, a Charity Tax Rebate program for eligible registered charities, a Heritage Tax Relief Program for owners of heritage properties, and a Tax Appeal process as legislated by the Province of Ontario.

Property tax assistance program

You can apply to receive a $400 tax credit on your account if you owned and occupied your property from January 1 to December 31 of the previous year, and meet one of the following qualifications:

  1. Low Income Senior aged 65 years or older receiving benefits under the Guaranteed Income Supplement or the Guaranteed Annual Income System.
  2. Low Income Senior aged 55-64 with a combined taxable income of less than $30,000 per year.
  3. Low Income Person with a Disability receiving benefits under the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP).

Complete the Property Tax Assistance program application. You can drop off your completed form as well as supporting documents in-person to the Tax Office, City Hall, 500 George St. N. in Peterborough. You can also mail or email your application as well as copies of supporting documents to:

Charity tax rebate program

Registered charities located in owned, leased, or rented premises taxed at the commercial or industrial tax rate are eligible to apply for the Charity Tax Rebate program. The rebate amount is based on 75% of the total property tax payable by charity for the year, to a maximum limit of $50,000.

Heritage tax relief program

Owners of property designated under the Ontario Heritage Act may be eligible to receive tax relief on their eligible heritage property in the amount of 40% for residential properties and 20% for commercial and multi-residential properties.

 Application for tax appeal

Properties that have been demolished, damaged or destroyed by fire, or have had a change in use may qualify for a tax reduction. Please submit the Application for Tax Appeal by the last day of February to be considered for a reduction of the previous year's taxes.
