Staying Cool as Temperatures Soar

Peterborough, ON – Environment Canada is forecasting hot, humid temperatures at or above 30 C for much of this week.  

Residents in need of a place to cool down are encouraged to visit any of the following City of Peterborough facilities during regular business hours:  

  • Peterborough Public Library, 345 Aylmer St. N., 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.  

  • Miskin Law Community Complex, 271 Lansdowne St. W., 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.  

  • Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, 775 Brealey Dr., 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. 

On Wednesday, July 1, the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre and the Miskin Law Community Complex will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Canada Day. The Peterborough Public Library will be closed on Canada Day.  

The City of Peterborough has an interactive Cooling Centre Map to help residents find a location to cool down in.

Trinity Community Centre  

The drop-in program at Trinity Community Centre, 360 Reid St., is open from daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for individuals to access resources, community connection and systems navigation support. The overnight program is open 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.  

Water Refill Stations  

Outdoor water bottle filling stations are available at City facilities in the following locations: 

  • Quaker Foods City Square, 215 Charlotte St. 

  • Eastgate Park, 2150 Ashburnham Dr. 

  • Peterborough Marina, 92 George St. N. 

  • Beavermead Park washroom facilities, 2011 Ashburnham Dr. 

  • Rogers Cove washroom facilities, 131 Maria St. 

  • Bonnerworth Park washroom facilities, 560 McDonnel St.  

Water bottles can also be refilled inside the following City facilities during hours of operation: 

  • Peterborough Public Library, 345 Aylmer St. 

  • Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, 775 Brealey Dr. 

  • Healthy Planet Arena, 911 Monaghan Rd. 

  • Kinsmen Civic Centre, 1 Kinsmen Way 

  • Social Services office, 178 Charlotte St. 

  • Miskin Law Community Complex, 271 Lansdowne St. W. 

Beaches 

Beavermead Beach, 2011 Ashburnham Dr., is supervised. Lifeguards are on duty from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Sunday, August 30.  

The beach at Rogers Cove will not be supervised by a lifeguard but is maintained by the City.  

Lakelands Public Health monitors the water quality at Beavermead Beach and Rogers Cove.  Information on water quality and water quality testing can be found online at lakelandsph.ca or by calling 705-743-1000.  

Splash Pads 

Splash pads are open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The splash pad at Riverview Park and Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • King Edward Park, 455 George St. S. 

  • Turner Park, corner of Chamberlain and High streets 

  • Hamilton Park, 575 Bonaccord St.  

  • Barnardo Park, Barnardo Avenue (north of Sunset Boulevard).  

  • Kinsmen Park, 1 Kinsmen Way  

  • Valleymore Park, 338 Spillsbury Dr. 

  • Riverview Park and Zoo, 1300 Water St.  

  • A water feature also exists at Quaker Foods City Square, 215 Charlotte St.
