Peterborough Strengthens Access to Healthcare
Peterborough, ON — More residents will have the opportunity to access primary healthcare this summer as new family physicians establish practices, and local clinics expand to welcome patients in Peterborough.
Several physicians have recently joined practices across the city, increasing opportunities for residents to receive ongoing, in-person primary care closer to home.
"This is tremendous news for healthcare in Peterborough and for the thousands of residents who will now have improved access to primary care," said Mayor Jeff Leal. "Connecting more people with the healthcare they need remains a top priority for the City. We will continue working alongside our healthcare partners to attract new family physicians, support local medical practices, and make it easier for residents to access care. Every new family physician who chooses Peterborough strengthens our healthcare system and helps build a healthier community for everyone."
New and expanding clinics that are now accepting patients include:
-
East City Medical Centre, 880 Armour Rd: Dr. Abimbola Ekundayo has joined Dr. Duke. The clinic now offers family medicine and walk-in care seven days a week. Dr. Akeredolu will join the practice on August 1, 2026.
-
Valleyview Medical (2 locations): Dr. Henry Oghotuoma and Dr. Babajide Odusan are accepting patients now at two new locations: Lansdowne Mall, 769 Borden Ave., and Peterborough Pharmacy, 1774 Lansdowne St. Also joining Valleyview, Dr. Rubayat Chowdhury, a Peterborough resident who recently returned to the community after completing his family medicine residency in the United States, will begin seeing patients this month.
-
Northcrest Pharmacy and Medical Clinic, 184 Marina Blvd: Dr. Emmanuel Onifade has joined Dr. Tosin Tifase as the clinic continues to expand its healthcare services.
-
Springdale Medical Centre, 743 Lansdowne St W: Dr. Offiong has joined this clinic and has a full practice, but the clinic continues to take patients registered on the Health Care Connect list.
Many of these clinics now offer evening and weekend appointments, as well as walk-ins, making care more accessible for patients.
"Our community is fortunate to have many dedicated family physicians providing outstanding care to patients every day," said Chantal Van Parys, Program Manager, Physician Recruitment and Primary Care for the City of Peterborough. "The City's role is to support family physicians as they establish and grow their practices, while helping residents understand where new patient capacity exists. Connecting family physicians with the support they need and helping patients find available care are both essential to improving access to primary care."
Residents without a family physician, or those who currently travel outside the region for primary care, can contact these clinics directly, as each practice manages its own registration process. These new patient spaces are intended to improve access for residents who do not currently have a local family physician. Registering with Health Care Connect, Ontario's patient attachment program, no longer requires residents to give up their out-of-town family physician while they wait to establish care locally. While awaiting attachment, residents with immediate, non-emergency healthcare needs can access the Connect Clinic and other appropriate local primary care services.
The City, the Peterborough Ontario Health Team and primary care partners are collaborating to develop a centralized online resource that will help residents find available patient attachment pathways. Expected to launch on the Peterborough Ontario Health Team website this fall, the resource will be updated as new primary care capacity becomes available across the community, including family physicians joining existing Family Health Organizations, community practices and other participating primary care providers accepting new patients.
