New Exhibition to Showcase F.L. Roy’s Cinematic Legacy at the Peterborough Museum and Archives
Peterborough, ON - A new temporary exhibition, "Films from the Freezer: Preserving F.L. Roy’s Cinematic Legacy," opens at the Peterborough Museum & Archives (PMA), 300 Hunter St. E., on Saturday, September 19.
"Films from the Freezer" invites visitors to discover a collection of historically significant films made by local photographer and filmmaker Fred L. Roy that were damaged during Peterborough’s 2004 flood. The exhibition explores Roy’s life and work, while highlighting the innovative project that helped restore and preserve these films for future generations.
Visitors will have the rare opportunity to see a selection of Roy’s films on screen publicly for the first time in 75 years. Through photographs, archival materials, film and stories, the exhibition offers a unique look at Peterborough’s history and the work of a local filmmaker who captured moments of the community on camera.
This temporary exhibition will be on display until Sunday, November 1. Members of the public are encouraged to visit the PMA and experience Roy’s cinematic legacy firsthand.
“Preserving these films means preserving stories, places and moments from Peterborough’s past,” says Jon Oldham, Archivist of the Peterborough Museum & Archives. “This exhibition gives visitors a rare chance to see Fred L. Roy’s cinematic work while learning about the important preservation efforts that made it possible to share these films again.”
"Films from the Freezer: Preserving F.L. Roy’s Cinematic Legacy" explores both the significance of Roy’s original films and the preservation work that made it possible to share these moving images with audiences today. The exhibition provides an opportunity to experience a piece of Peterborough’s history that has not been publicly seen on screen for 75 years.
Admission to the exhibition is by donation.
