Mayor Statement Regarding Treaties Recognition Week, November 1 to 7, 2026

Peterborough, ON - Mayor Jeff Leal has issued the following statement in recognition of Treaties Recognition Week:

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario, an opportunity to learn about the treaties that have shaped our province and deepen our understanding of the rights, responsibilities and relationships they continue to represent.

Here in Peterborough, these agreements are an important part of our local history and our relationships with Indigenous communities today. Our city is located on the traditional and treaty territories of the Williams Treaties First Nations which include Hiawatha First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation, Alderville First Nation, Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, Chippewas of Rama First Nation, Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, and Chippewas of Beausoleil First Nation. For generations, the Anishinaabeg people have cared for these lands and waters.

I encourage residents to take time this week to learn about the treaties connected to our region, listen to Indigenous perspectives and reflect on what it means to honour these agreements. Understanding the history of the land where we live and the commitments that continue today is an important part of building respect, strengthening relationships and supporting meaningful reconciliation.
