May 17: International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia

Mayor Jeff Leal has issued the following statement about the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, which takes place each year on May 17, 2026:

“On International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we stand together to affirm that everyone deserves to live with dignity, safety and respect, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

"This day is an important reminder that while progress has been made, discrimination and barriers continue to impact members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

"We all have a responsibility to foster a culture of inclusion where all residents feel seen, valued, and supported. Peterborough is strongest when it is welcoming and inclusive. We are committed to continuing the work of advancing equity, challenging discrimination, and creating spaces where diversity is not only accepted, but celebrated.

"Today, and every day, we stand in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQ+ community and reaffirm our commitment to building a community where everyone can live authentically and without fear.”
