Fireworks Safety Reminders from Peterborough Fire Services

Peterborough, ON – With Canada Day celebrations on the horizon, Peterborough Fire Services is reminding everyone to put safety first when using fireworks.

By using the right equipment, following safety guidelines and disposing of fireworks properly, residents can help ensure a fun and safe holiday for everyone.

Residents who use fireworks must follow the Fireworks and Noise By-laws and be aware of safety precautions when using fireworks. Fireworks can also disturb pets.

City by-laws allow for the use of family or casual fireworks in the City on private property. Fireworks cannot be discharged on City property. Larger exhibition-style firework displays require a permit.

“Canada Day is a time to celebrate with family and friends, and we want everyone to enjoy the holiday safely. We encourage residents to attend one of the professionally organized public firework displays taking place in our community on Wednesday to safely enjoy the excitement of fireworks without the risks,” said Fire Chief Chris Snetsinger. “If you choose to use fireworks, take the time to read and follow the instructions, keep water nearby and make safety your top priority.”

Peterborough Fire Services provides the following safety tips when using fireworks:

  • Only adults who are aware of the hazards and have read the label should handle and discharge fireworks.

  • Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by when discharging fireworks.

  • Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials like buildings, trees and dry grass.

  • Keep onlookers a safe distance away, upwind from the area where fireworks are discharged.

  • Do not discharge fireworks in windy conditions.

  • Keep sparklers away from children, as they are extremely hot and pose a risk of burns and eye injuries.

Reminder: Open-air burning is not permitted in the City of Peterborough

Open-air burning is not permitted within the City of Peterborough.

Open-air burning includes any outdoor fires such as bonfires, campfires, and burning of yard waste. These activities pose a risk to public safety and can have serious consequences, especially in densely populated areas.

Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) approved fire bowls, fire-pit tables, and barbeques that burn propane or natural gas are examples of approved appliances that may be used. Chimineas and other wood-burning devices are not approved appliances for open air fires.

Residents are encouraged to dispose of yard waste using the City's yard waste collection services.
