City of Peterborough and IBEW Local 636 Collective Bargaining

Peterborough, ON – Collective bargaining negotiations are ongoing between the City of Peterborough and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 636, which represents approximately 78 City employees that work in various areas, including Water Services and the Riverview Park and Zoo. 

IBEW Local 636 has been granted a no-board report by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development as part of the ongoing collective bargaining process between the City and IBEW Local 636. 

IBEW Local 636 is in a legal strike position and the City is in a legal lockout position. There is no immediate impact to services.  

No labour disruption is underway. The City has prepared contingency plans in the event of a labour disruption to minimize the disruption on City services. 

Water Services 

In the event of a labour disruption, water quality will be maintained. Measures are in place to ensure the safety and reliability of the City's drinking water system. 

Water treatment, monitoring, sampling, testing, and regulatory compliance requirements will continue to be maintained throughout any labour disruption. 

The City is working collaboratively with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to ensure all requirements under Ontario's drinking water regulations will continue to be met.  

Riverview Park and Zoo 

Riverview Park and Zoo will be closed in the event of a labour disruption. The closure of the zoo is required to dedicate the full attention and resources of the remaining staff to the care, health and wellbeing of the animals at the zoo. 

The miniature train ride at the Riverview Park and Zoo will also be closed to the public during a labour disruption. 

Other City services 

Other City services will be maintained during an IBEW labour disruption. Residents and customers may experience delays with customer service related to Water Services inquiries to Service Peterborough at City Hall.  

City Hall will remain open in the event of a labour disruption. The Clerk’s Office, Building Services and the Provincial Offences office will be unaffected.

Negotiation details are confidential. The City remains committed to an agreement with IBEW Local 636 that supports employees and residents.
