Celebrate National Public Works Week at Nicholls Oval

Peterborough, ON – Get an up-close look at City of Peterborough Public Works vehicles and equipment during a Touch a Truck event, see live demonstrations by arborists, and get a free tree during National Public Works Week.

National Public Works Week, taking place May 17 to 23, 2026, celebrates the essential services that public works professionals provide in supporting, maintaining and improving the community.

“Public works plays an essential role in the day-to-day operations residents rely on across the city. From the roads and sidewalks we travel on and the maintenance that keeps them safe, to forestry, urban forestry and waste collection, public works supports daily life in our community,” said Municipal Operations Co-Chairs Don Vassiliadis and Keith Riel.

“National Public Works Week is an opportunity to recognize the staff behind this work and the role they play in supporting the city. This event will give residents a chance to learn more about how public works operates and contributes to the services we rely on.”

This year’s theme, Rooted in Service, Powered by Community, recognizes the deep foundation of public works, highlighting both the visible and behind-the-scenes work that goes into maintaining essential infrastructure.

To mark the occasion, the City is inviting residents to a free event at Nicholls Oval, 725 Armour Rd., on Wednesday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is an opportunity to connect with staff, learn more about the services that keep the City and County running, and experience public works firsthand through interactive activities, demonstrations and outdoor learning.

  • Touch a Truck: Get an up-close look at Public Works vehicles and equipment.

  • Demonstrations: City arborists will host live demonstrations, showcasing safe tree climbing practices.
