The City of Peterborough Celebrates Local Government Week

Peterborough, ON - The City of Peterborough is celebrating Local Government Week from October 19 to 25, 2025. This week highlights the important role of local government and the essential services it provides.

Local Government Week is recognized annually across Ontario, organized in collaboration with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks, and Treasurers of Ontario. This week encourages understanding of how municipalities operate, recognizes the dedication of employees and promotes awareness of the wide range of careers in municipal government.

To commemorate the week, the City welcomed local students for an inside look at municipal operations, highlighting essential work and how local decision making directly impacts the community. On tours at a variety of City facilities, students learned about operations at City Hall, Riverview Park and Zoo, Peterborough Regional Airport, Peterborough Memorial Centre and Peterborough Museum and Archives.

“We were excited to welcome students and provide an opportunity to explore our day-to-day activities, offering a firsthand look at City operations, our responsibilities, and the many career paths available in the municipal sector,” said Mayor Leal.

“By providing an opportunity to gain insight into the services we provide and how local government operates, it may inspire students to explore career paths they may not have previously considered.

“From inside Council Chambers to an educational guided tour at Riverview Park and Zoo, students participated in a variety of experiences showcasing the diversity of municipal work.”
