Temporary Additional Shelter Space January 24-25, 2026
Peterborough, ON – A former fire services building at 161 Carnegie Ave. will be used to temporarily add 40 new overnight emergency shelter beds to the current 127-bed emergency shelter system during the Cold Warning for January 24-25, 2026.
The temporary shelter on Carnegie will operate as an overflow shelter and warming space for the regular shelter network.
People seeking emergency shelter will continue to first contact the regular emergency shelters and will be referred to the temporary shelter on Carnegie if a space is not available in the regular emergency shelters. Transportation will be provided from the regular emergency shelters to the temporary shelter if needed.
The temporary shelter will operate from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., with the temporary shelter scheduled to cease operations in the morning on Monday, January 26.
The regular shelter network includes the following shelters and services:

· YES Shelter for Youth and Families, 196 Brock St., 705-748-3851
· Cameron House, 738 Chemong Rd., 705-748-4766 ext. 2
· Trinity Community Centre, 360 Reid St., runs daytime and overnight drop-in programs, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., respectively.
Emergency shelters and agencies that provide services for people who experience homelessness have been informed of the availability of the temporary shelter service to help let people know that there is additional indoor space available during the Cold Warning.
Lakelands Public Health has issued a Cold Warning for the County of Haliburton, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland County, and the City and County of Peterborough for January 24 to January 25.
Environment Canada currently expects that temperatures in Peterborough will reach a low of -22C with windchill near -30 overnight on Saturday, January 24. A low of -16C is expected at night on Sunday, January 25.
