Peterborough Fire Services Reminds Residents to Change Their Clocks and Check Their Alarms
Peterborough, ON - As residents prepare to turn their clocks back one hour this weekend, Peterborough Fire Services is reminding everyone to take a few extra minutes to test their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.
“Working alarms save lives,” said Fire Chief Chris Snetsinger. “When you change your clocks, it is the perfect time to make sure your smoke and CO alarms are working properly. Test them, replace the batteries if needed, and check the expiry dates.”
Smoke and CO alarms have a limited lifespan, typically 10 years for smoke alarms, depending on the manufacturer. Alarms that are beyond their expiry date should be replaced immediately.
Starting January 1, 2026, new Ontario Fire Code requirements will expand where CO alarms must be installed. These changes will improve safety across Ontario by ensuring more comprehensive protection from this invisible, odorless, and deadly gas.
Key highlights of the new CO alarm requirements include:
-
Existing Homes: CO alarms will be required on every storey, not just near sleeping areas.
-
Multi-Unit Residential Buildings: CO alarms must be installed in all suites meeting certain conditions, as well as in service rooms and, in some cases, public corridors.
-
Care Occupancies and Group Homes: CO alarms will be required in more areas to protect vulnerable residents.
Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer because you cannot see, smell, or taste it. Regular testing and proper installation of CO alarms is the best way to keep your family safe.
Residents are reminded that it is the law in Ontario to have working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. CO alarms must be outside sleeping areas if your home has any fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage.
