Ontario Investing $50,000 to host Hockey Canada’s TELUS Cup in the City of Peterborough

Community event will boost Peterborough’s economy and support Ontario’s athletes

Today, Dave Smith, MPP for Peterborough-Kawartha, announced that the Ontario
government is investing $50,000 to the City of Peterborough to host Hockey Canada’s TELUS Cup
in Peterborough from April 20, 2026 – April 26, 2006. This is part of the government’s plan to
protect the economy and promote active, healthy living across Ontario.

This funding announcement is coupled with growing excitement in the local community for the
TELUS Cup to take place in Peterborough. The TELUS Cup is currently on display for fans and
community members to see at the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame, located inside the
Peterborough Memorial Centre. For updates on the TELUS Cup please visit MemorialCentre.ca, or

“This investment of $50,000 to bring the TELUS Cup to Peterborough is fantastic news for our
community. Hockey Canada’s national championship will not only showcase the tremendous talent
of the young athletes but will also generate significant economic activity for our local businesses,
restaurants, and hotels,” said Dave Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough-
Kawartha.” By supporting events like this, our government is following through on its commitment
to promote active, healthy living while reinforcing Peterborough-Kawartha’s reputation as a premier
destination for world-class amateur sport.” MPP Smith added.

“Securing support through the Ontario Sport Hosting Program is an important step on the road to the
TELUS Cup," shared Peterborough City Councillors Lesley Parnell and Alex Bierk, Community
Services co-chairs. "As we prepare to showcase Peterborough on the national stage, strong
collaboration across all levels of government is crucial. We’re grateful to the Government of Ontario
for recognizing the value these tournaments bring to our community."

Funding is provided through the Ontario Sport Hosting Program and is part of over $1.6 million that
the Ministry of Sport is investing in supporting 21 national and 9 international amateur sport events
in communities across the province. These events will welcome 10,000 athletes from across Canada
and around the world to Ontario and are expected to generate over $34 million in economic activity.

“Sport tourism is a major economic driver for our province, and an important part of our
government’s plan to protect Ontario’s economy,” said Neil Lumsden, Minister of Sport. “Through
these investments, we’re helping communities unlock the benefits of sport hosting, while giving our athletes the chance to compete here at home, and reinforcing Ontario’s reputation as a premier
destination for world-class events.”

The Ontario Sport Hosting Program helps bring national and international amateur sport events to the
province by providing funding to organizations to host them. These events encourage investment in
local sport infrastructure, help boost local economies and increase tourism. They also provide an
opportunity for athletes to train and develop their skills right here at home.
