National Indigenous Veterans Day
Mayor Jeff Leal has issued the following statement in recognition of National Indigenous Veterans Day:
“On National Indigenous Veterans Day, November 8, we honour the extraordinary courage and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Veterans who have served Canada with dedication across generations.
"From the enlistment of thousands of Indigenous soldiers in the First World War, to their vital roles in the Second World War and their heroism during the Korean War and beyond, Indigenous service members have consistently answered the call of duty.
"Indigenous veterans have played an essential role in defending Canada’s freedoms and values, yet often faced challenges and unfair treatment both during and after their service. I encourage everyone to take time to learn their stories, which are an important part of our shared history.
"Their contributions extended far beyond the battlefield. Many Indigenous communities donated resources to support Canada’s war efforts. Today, we celebrate their legacy, service and sacrifice.”
