National Indigenous Peoples Day: June 21

Mayor Jeff Leal has released the following statement for National Indigenous Peoples Day:

“I am honoured to recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to celebrate the rich cultures, traditions and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.

"Here in Nogojiwanong Peterborough, the place at the end of the rapids, we are grateful to live and work on the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg. We recognize and give thanks to all the Mississaugas, including Alderville and Scugog Island, and a special thanks to Curve Lake and Hiawatha, whose deep connections to this land continue to shape our community in meaningful ways.

"National Indigenous Peoples Day is a moment not only to celebrate but also to reflect and acknowledge the truth of our shared history and to learn from it. The legacy of colonization, residential schools and systemic injustice has caused profound harm. Understanding that history is essential as we move forward together in the spirit of reconciliation and respect.

"Let today be a reminder of our collective responsibility to honour Indigenous voices, uphold Indigenous rights, and walk together in partnership toward a better future.”
