National Indigenous Languages Day is March 31
Mayor Jeff Leal has issued the following statement regarding National Indigenous Languages Day:
“On March 31 we recognize the importance of supporting Indigenous-led efforts to preserve and strengthen Indigenous languages. By learning about the history and cultures of Indigenous peoples and respecting the languages that have long been spoken on this land, we can contribute to a deeper understanding and to the ongoing journey of reconciliation.
"Indigenous languages carry knowledge, history, culture and identity. They are an essential part of the traditions and worldviews of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and play a vital role in connecting generations and strengthening communities.
"Across Canada, many Indigenous languages have faced profound difficulties due to the impacts of colonization and policies such as the Canadian Indian residential school system, which sought to suppress Indigenous cultures and languages.
"Today, Indigenous communities, language keepers and educators continue important work to revitalize and protect these languages for future generations.
"On behalf of City Council, I encourage residents to reflect on the significance of Indigenous languages and the role they play in the cultural vitality and diversity of our country and our community.”
