Multi-Day Heat Warning Issued for City of Peterborough

Peterborough, ON – Environment Canada has issued a multi-day heat warning with high heat and humidity expected to last until Tuesday night.  

Daytime temperatures may reach highs of 32 to 35 C, with a humidex value of 37 to 42 C expected.  

To help residents find places to stay cool and hydrated, the City has developed an interactive Cooling Spaces map. Residents can use the map to find the nearest cooling space, water refill station, splash pad or green space based on their location.  

Residents can also visit any of the following City facilities during opening hours:  

  • Peterborough Public Library, 345 Aylmer St. N., 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  

  • Miskin Law Community Complex, 271 Lansdowne St. W., 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.  

  • Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, 775 Brealey Dr., 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. 

Information about how to protect yourself from extreme heat and recognize symptoms of heat-related illness is available on Peterborough Public Health website’s at peterboroughpublichealth.ca/extremeheat.  

Trinity Community Centre  

The drop-in program at Trinity Community Centre, 360 Reid St., is open from daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for individuals to access resources, community connection and systems navigation support. The overnight program is open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.  

Water Refill Stations  

Outdoor water bottle filling stations are available at City facilities in the following locations: 

  • Quaker Foods City Square, 215 Charlotte St. 

  • Eastgate Park, 2150 Ashburnham Dr. 

  • Peterborough Marina, 92 George St. N. 

  • Beavermead Park washroom facilities, 2011 Ashburnham Dr. 

  • Rogers Cove washroom facilities, 131 Maria St.  

Water bottles can also be refilled inside the following City facilities during hours of operation: 

  • Peterborough Public Library, 345 Aylmer St. 

  • Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, 775 Brealey Dr. 

  • Miskin Law Community Complex, 271 Lansdowne St. W. 

Beaches 

Beavermead Beach, 2011 Ashburnham Dr., has lifeguard supervision Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.  

The beach at Rogers Cove is an unsupervised beach.  

Peterborough Public Health monitors the water quality at Beavermead Beach and Rogers Cove. Information on water quality and water quality testing can be found online at peterboroughpublichealth.ca or by calling 705-743-1000.  

Splash Pads 

Splash pads are open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The splash pad at Riverview Park and Zoo is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Open air burning prohibited 

Residents are reminded that open-air burning is not permitted in the City of Peterborough. This includes any outdoor fires such as bonfires, campfires, and burning of yard waste. These activities pose a risk to public safety and can have serious consequences, especially in densely populated areas.    

Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) approved fire bowls, fire-pit tables, and barbeques that burn propane or natural gas are examples of approved appliances that may be used. Chimineas and other wood-burning devices are not approved appliances for open air fires.   

Level 1 Drought conditions continue 

Otonabee Conservation has declared a Level 1 drought due to dry conditions across the region following significantly reduced rainfall and extended periods of heat through June and July. 

During Level 1 drought conditions, Otonabee Conservation recommends a 10% voluntary reduction in water consumption to help ease pressure on local water supplies. Residents and businesses are asked to limit non-essential water use, including lawn watering, car washing, pool filling and other outdoor water activities.
