June is Deafblind Awareness Month

Mayor Jeff Leal has issued the following statement recognizing Deafblind Awareness Month in June:

“Deafblind Awareness Month is a time to honour the resilience and strength of individuals who live with combined vision and hearing loss. In Peterborough, we are proud to stand in solidarity with members of the Deafblind community, their families and the organizations that support them.

"Deafblindness presents unique challenges, but it also highlights the importance of connection, communication and community. Through tactile art installations, educational campaigns, and community events, we can foster greater understanding and inclusivity.

"Peterborough is committed to removing barriers and creating an accessible and inclusive community. Recently, we have introduced Accessible Listening Technology at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, making a key city facility more inclusive to our community. We will continue to ensure that every resident, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to participate fully in our community.

"Let us use this month to educate ourselves, support our neighbours and celebrate the diverse contributions of the Deafblind community.”
