International Day of Persons with Disabilities
Mayor Jeff Leal has released the following statement in recognition of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, which occurs on December 3, 2025.
“On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we reaffirm our commitment to building a community where everyone is included, valued and able to participate fully in daily life. This day reminds us of the importance of removing barriers, both seen and unseen, and of working together to create a city that is accessible to all.
"I want to thank the individuals, families, advocates, and organizations in Peterborough who continue to lead the way in championing inclusion and accessibility. Your voices and your work make our community stronger.”
Proclamation
Whereas First observed by the United Nations in on this day in 1992, International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) establishes a global commitment to advancing the rights, dignity, and full participation of persons with disabilities in every sphere of life;
Whereas Each year, IDPD serves as a reminder of the urgent need to eliminate barriers, challenge discrimination, and build societies where all people, regardless of ability, can thrive; and
Whereas the 2025 theme, “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” emphasizes the crucial role municipalities play in ensuring that persons with disabilities can participate fully and equitably in their communities. It reaffirms our commitment to building inclusive, accessible, and sustainable local environments, where progress is driven by the full engagement and contributions of all residents;
Therefore, Be It Resolved that I, Jeff Leal, Mayor of the City of Peterborough, do hereby proclaim December 3, 2025 as International Day of Persons with Disabilities in the City of Peterborough. Let this day serve as a call to action to foster disability-inclusive societies, dismantle systemic barriers, and uphold the dignity, rights, and contributions of persons with disabilities, so that social progress may be truly shared by all.
