Ice and Fast Water Safety Reminder from Peterborough Fire Services
Peterborough, ON - As temperatures fluctuate and ice conditions change, Peterborough Fire Services is reminding residents to stay safe around rivers, lakes and waterways.
Warmer daytime temperatures and fast-moving water can quickly weaken ice, creating dangerous and unpredictable conditions.
“Conditions can change quickly,” said Peterborough Fire Services Chief Chris Snetsinger. “The safest choice is to stay off ice that you are unsure about, and keep a safe distance from fast-moving water.”
Residents are encouraged to share the following safety reminders with family members and children who may be spending time outdoors near local waterways.
Ice Safety Tips
- Stay off rivers and moving water. Ice over fast water is often thinner and less stable.
- Keep pets on a leash near water. If a pet falls through the ice, do not attempt a rescue yourself, call for help.
If someone falls through the ice
- Call 911 immediately.
- Do not go onto the ice to attempt a rescue. Would-be rescuers run the risk of falling through the ice themselves.
- If possible, reach or throw something that floats (rope, branch, life jacket) from a safe distance.
