Emergency Shelter Services During Cold Alert January 24-25, 2026
Peterborough, ON – Emergency shelters and a winter overnight warming space are provided in the City of Peterborough to help keep people safe during the extreme cold.
On January 22, 2026, Lakelands Public Health issued a Cold Warning for the County of Haliburton, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland County, and the City and County of Peterborough for January 24 to January 25.
Environment Canada forecasts the temperature in Peterborough will fall to -28C in the evening on January 23, with the wind chill reaching -36C. Environment Canada warns of the risk of frostbite.
For January 24, the forecast shows a low of -25C.
“These frigid conditions pose a serious health risk, particularly during the early morning and later evening hours when temperatures are typically at their lowest. Lakelands Public Health urges all residents to take precautions to protect themselves,” the local public health agency states in its news release.
“It is also important to recognize signs of cold-related illness. Frostbite may cause pale, numb, or hard skin, typically on fingers, toes, ears, and nose. Hypothermia symptoms include intense shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and difficulty walking; severe hypothermia is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.”
Information on protecting yourself from the extreme cold can be found on Lakelands Public Health’s website. Visit lakelandsph.ca/cold for more information.
