Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval

Mayor Jeff Leal has issued the following statement:

“On July 28, we observe the Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval, a solemn moment in our history that began in 1755 with the forced deportation of thousands of Acadian people from their homelands in what are now Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island,” said Mayor Jeff Leal.

“This tragic event resulted in the separation of families, the destruction of vibrant communities, and the loss of countless lives. For many Acadians, it marked the beginning of years filled with hardship, displacement, and sorrow. Yet, amid this dark chapter, the story of resilience shines through. Acadian communities endured, returned, and rebuilt, preserving a rich culture that continues to thrive and enrich our collective identity.

“Today, we honour the memory of those affected and recognize the extraordinary strength and perseverance of the Acadian people. Despite unimaginable challenges, their culture not only survived but flourished.

“I encourage all residents to reflect on this important moment in history and to honor the legacy of Acadian communities with respect and remembrance.”
