Commemorative Crosswalk to be installed on George Street

Peterborough, ON – A commemorative crosswalk in honour of Canadian veterans will be installed at the intersection of George and McDonnel streets this fall.

The commemorative crosswalk was designed in collaboration with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 Peterborough. It will feature red and white stripes, the silhouette of a soldier, and the words “Lest We Forget”.

The commemorative crosswalk will be installed while asphalt work at the intersection of George and McDonnel streets is underway.

“The installation of this commemorative crosswalk is a powerful symbol of respect and remembrance. It reflects the pride Peterborough has in its veterans and the importance of keeping their legacy alive. This project is a wonderful collaboration with the Royal Canadian Legion, and I look forward to residents and visitors alike pausing to reflect as they pass through this meaningful space,” said Mayor Jeff Leal.

“The commemorative crosswalk is a visible, lasting tribute to Peterborough’s veterans, and a meaningful way to honour and remember the service and sacrifice our veterans have made. This will serve as a daily reminder of the freedoms we enjoy and the deep gratitude we owe to those who have served,” said Councillor Lesley Parnell, who put forward the idea of a commemorative crosswalk during a Council meeting in October 2024.

“On behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 Peterborough, I am pleased to see this great project come to fruition. This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the end of World War II, making this a very special tribute to all the men and women from Peterborough City and County who gave the ultimate sacrifice in both World Wars, the Korean War, Afghanistan and the numerous Peacekeeping Operations around the world in order for us to live free in this great country we call Canada. A heartfelt thanks to the City of Peterborough and Councillor Parnell for having this project move forward,” said Robert Lloyd, President Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 Peterborough.
