City of Peterborough Celebrates Circular Economy Month

Peterborough, ON – The City of Peterborough invites residents to cut down on waste by thinking outside the (recycling) box during Circular Economy Month.

Mayor Jeff Leal has proclaimed October to be Circular Economy Month. This month highlights opportunities for residents to keep waste out of the landfill by engaging in the existing share-reuse-repair economy in the community.

“This month is all about keeping unwanted items out of the landfill, reducing waste and sharing resources with friends and neighbours. Whether it’s by repurposing, reusing, upcycling or recycling, Circular Economy Month is a great way to find new ways to give old or unwanted items a second or even a third life. Don’t toss it out when you can swap it, fix it or flip it!” said Municipal Operations Co-Chairs Keith Riel and Don Vassiliadis in a joint statement.

A Circular Economy Month calendar listing ideas and ways to participate in Circular Economy Month can be found at peterborough.ca/reducewaste.

Ways to participate in Circular Economy Month include:

  • Visiting the Peterborough Public Library to borrow a book, movie, television show or use the computer.

  • Swapping items at the Waste Management Facility’s reuse building, 1260 Bensfort Rd.

  • Sharing and trading extra paint, stains and other products as part of the reusable product exchange at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot, located at 400 Pido Rd. The Depot is open Wednesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Taking Peterborough Transit to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions.

  • Putting household organics into the green bin to divert food waste from the landfill.
