Celebrating Transit Operator and Worker Appreciation Day
Peterborough, ON – Transit Operator and Worker Appreciation Day is recognized on March 18. The day provides an opportunity to recognize and thank the team at Peterborough Transit for helping keep the community connected and moving every day.
Peterborough Transit provides public transit services, including accessible service options, across the city, supporting residents with reliable transportation throughout the week.
Transit staff help riders travel to work, school, appointments and community activities. Behind the scenes, maintenance technicians ensure buses remain safe and reliable, and dispatchers coordinate daily service. Administrative and customer service staff manage routes, schedules and rider support.
Established in 2009 by the American Public Transportation Association, the day is observed by transit systems across North America to recognize the employees who operate and support public transportation. March 18 reflects the launch of one of the earliest modern public transit services in Paris, France, in 1662.
“On Transit Operator and Worker Appreciation Day, we sincerely thank our transit team for the service they provide to the City of Peterborough,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “Every day, they help residents get where they need to be. Their dedication supports daily life across our community, and we are grateful for the care and commitment they bring to their work. Their efforts make a meaningful difference for everyone who relies on public transit.”
“Every member of the transit team plays an important role in delivering dependable and accessible service,” said Municipal Operations co-chairs, Councillor Don Vassiliadis and Councillor Keith Riel, in a joint statement. “From operators behind the wheel to staff supporting operations behind the scenes, it takes a coordinated effort to keep our community moving. We thank our transit employees for the professionalism and care they demonstrate each day in serving the community.”
On December 9, 2025, Peterborough Transit was recognized by the Canadian Urban Transit Association as the top transit system per ridership among Canadian cities with populations under 100,000, recording more than 3.7 million rides. This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of the entire transit team.
