Bonnerworth Park Official Opening Celebration

Peterborough, ON - The City of Peterborough celebrated the official grand opening of Bonnerworth Park Saturday, November 8, 2025.

The revitalization of Bonnerworth Park includes a new bike pump track, an expanded skatepark and 14 new pickleball courts, including two accessible courts.

A new shade shelter was constructed in the park, made possible through a $200,000 community investment from Hydro One through work on the Durham Kawartha Powerline project. This new space provides a comfortable gathering space for park users and spectators, offering shade and rest between games and activities.

Other enhancements to the park include fresh sodding and a multipurpose trail linking all amenities. The perimeter of the park is lined with 202 new trees.

Saturday’s opening celebration was followed by an afternoon of activities on the bike pump track, skatepark and pickleball courts, led by city staff and user groups. Events are also scheduled to take place Monday, November 10.

Quotes:

“This revitalization brings fresh energy to Bonnerworth Park, creating a modern, inclusive space for a new generation. This is a park built for everyone, from skateboarders, cyclists and pickleball players to families who want to enjoy a sunny afternoon in Bonnerworth’s green space. Finished on time and on budget, Bonnerworth Park reflects Peterborough’s active spirit and will continue to be a place where people of all ages can come together.” City of Peterborough Mayor Jeff Leal

“Bonnerworth Park is a modern, accessible park marking a new and energetic chapter for recreation in Peterborough. The new amenities in this space are the result of collaboration with user groups, local organizations and the city. Together, we’ve created a welcoming, inclusive park that will serve residents for many years to come.” Community Services Co-Chair, Councillor Lesley Parnell.

"We're facing historic growth in demand for electricity in the next 25 years. As an Ontario-based company, we know an investment in the electricity system here at home is an investment in local communities, economies and a more prosperous province. The revitalization of Bonnerworth Park is a great example of how we can create lasting community value as we work together to meet the growing demand for electricity and build a brighter future." Craig Prewett, Director, Strategic Projects, Hydro One.

“Skateboarding in Peterborough is flying high today thanks to this much-needed investment in our community. The new skatepark represents more than just a great place to meet friends, hone your skills, and be active outdoors, it represents an acknowledgement from the City of Peterborough that our kids and cohorts matter, and we deserve the same opportunities as traditional athletes to be healthy and happy. We thank the City of Peterborough for trusting us throughout this process and collaborating with us in a meaningful way, and we send love to the many supporters throughout the region who continue to champion the growth and greatness of our sport and culture.”  Geoff Rix and Dan Post, co-founders, Peterborough Skateboard Coalition.

“The Peterborough Pickleball Association would like to thank Mayor Jeff Leal, the city councillors who supported the project and those city workers who worked tirelessly to provide Peterborough with this incredible pickleball facility. Peterborough pickleballers now have a place that everyone can gather to not only practice and play the game they love but to build friendships and foster community. We look forward to hosting tournaments and showcasing this one-of-a-kind facility to the rest of the pickleball community in Ontario and Canada.” Shelley Moloney, President, Peterborough Pickleball Association

"Riding a bike is a life skill. Whether you ride for transportation or recreation, building handling skills is important for safety. This pump track will allow many people to build those skills. I am absolutely delighted to see this free, publicly accessible facility open today and look forward to seeing many kids and families build skills here. I know the pump track will generate many, many smiles per hour!” Tegan Moss, Bike Skills Park PTBO.
