April is Sikh Heritage Month
Mayor Jeff Leal has issued the following statement for Sikh Heritage Month:
“Recognized throughout the month of April, Sikh Heritage Month is a time to celebrate Sikh Canadians locally and across the country.
"First established in Ontario in 2013 through the Sikh Heritage Month Act, April was chosen in part because it coincides with Vaisakhi, one of the most significant celebrations in the Sikh calendar, marked by gatherings, reflection and celebration.
"Sikh Heritage Month provides an opportunity to recognize the Sikh community in Peterborough, learn more about Sikh history, and reflect on the experiences and contributions of Sikh residents. I’m grateful for the strong sense of community that our Sikh neighbours bring to our city, and for the chance this month gives us to deepen our understanding of Sikh culture, traditions and values.”
