2026 OUA Women’s Fencing Championships Coming to Peterborough
The 2026 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Women’s Fencing Championships, hosted by Trent University, will take place at the Peterborough Memorial Centre this weekend – January 24 - 25, 2026.
The event will welcome 13 university teams from across Ontario, featuring top student-athletes from post-secondary institutions from across the province, including the host Trent Excalibur women’s fencing team. Over two days of individual and team relay competition, the championship is expected to bring more than 150 participants, coaches, and officials to the community, along with visiting families and spectators.
“Peterborough is proud to welcome the 2026 OUA Women’s Fencing Championships and to cheer on the Trent Excalibur athletes who represent both their university and the Peterborough community with excellence,” shared Peterborough City Councillor Lesley Parnell, Community Services co-chair. “This championship is a wonderful example of what’s possible when we work together with the world-class institutions that call this community home, while showcasing our outstanding facilities, vibrant campus-community partnerships, and warm hospitality to student-athletes, families, and supporters from across Ontario.”
Women’s fencing is one of three Trent Excalibur varsity clubs that bring student-athletes of all skill levels together as both a competitive team and a recreational club. The club offers training and coaching in foil, epee, and sabre, and functions as a competitive OUA varsity club, attending sanctioned competitions from October through March.
“We’re honoured to welcome student-athletes, coaches and officials from across Ontario to Peterborough, and to give our Excalibur fencers the opportunity to ‘Defend the River’ on home soil, in front of their community,” said Nathan McFadden, director of Trent Athletics and Recreation. “This OUA championship is the result of a collaborative effort across our department and in conjunction with the Peterborough Memorial Centre. We’re excited to watch our dedicated coaches and talented student-athletes compete, in addition to providing an exceptional student-athlete experience.”
The tournament is the latest sport tourism win brought to the community by Peterborough Tourism. Sport tourism events bring significant economic benefits through facility bookings, overnight stays, and increased exposure to a new audience of athletes, supporters, and spectators.
