Curb Cut Permits

The City of Peterborough regulates curb cuts, which are breaks in the curb to facilitate an entrance to your property from the roadway. A request for a curb cut can be made to the City of Peterborough to modify and widen an existing entrance or to install a new entrance. If the request is approved, then the required fee is to be paid by the applicant to the City of Peterborough and the City of Peterborough will have their contractor cut the curb.

There are several things to consider before making changes to your driveway:

  • All curb cuts require a site inspection before approval. The City of Peterborough will contact Owner/Agent to schedule a site meet if required.
  • All costs associated with any modification required, are the responsibility of the applicant (including the curb cut, any necessary sidewalk modification, tree removal, and utility relocation).
  • A third-party contractor completes curb cuts. The City of Peterborough cannot guarantee timelines of work being completed by the contractor. Typical turnaround times for work to be completed by the contractor is 2-3 weeks after the processing and approval of curb cut.
  • Exact matching of existing depressed curbs is not guaranteed as the contractor uses a horizontal curb cutting machine. This machine will cut an even and uniform cut through the full thickness of the curb.
  • Property owners and/or contractors hired by property owners are not permitted to work on or alter City of Peterborough owned infrastructure including sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. Work to be completed only by City of Peterborough’s own forces or contractors contracted by the City of Peterborough.
  • Driveway to meet all zoning and by-law requirements within the City of Peterborough. Zoning By-law Section 4: Parking, Loading and Driveways
  • Driveway must extend 5.7m onto private property and be a minimum of 2.7m wide to achieve a legal parking space within areas 2 and 3. For area 1, Driveways must extend 5.5m onto private property and be a minimum of 2.5m wide. Parking space to be located fully on private property as per by-law.
  • A single unit residential lot with a lot width less than 9m will be permitted a maximum driveway width at street line of 3m.
  • A single unit residential lot with a lot width of 9m or greater will be permitted a maximum driveway width at street line of 6m.
  • Minimum distance between driveway and intersecting street lines to be 6m.
  • A minimum lot width of 20m required to be permitted two entrances on a single frontage.
  • There can be no change in the location, direction, or elevation of any swale or ditch used to drain land to facilitate an entrance widening.

Trees

A permit from the City of Peterborough’s Urban Forestry Division will be required if a City of Peterborough or privately owned tree is in conflict before approval of curb cut will be granted. By-law #21-074.

Unassumed New Subdivisions

If your subdivision has not been assumed by the City of Peterborough, the curb and gutters are still under the developer’s ownership/responsibility. You will be contacted by the City of Peterborough’s Engineering and Capital Works Division for the process of obtaining approval for a curb and driveway modification in an unassumed area of the City of Peterborough. Approval requirements and process will vary by unassumed subdivision. All required modifications, if approved, will be at the cost of the applicant.

Fees

  • Minimum charge (10 feet or less): $325 + HST
  • Price per foot, if longer than 10 feet: $31 per foot + HST

*Additional charges may be applied associated if any other modifications required.
