Windy weather conditions and blowing recyclables

blue boxes on a driveway

Peterborough, ON – Strong, gusty winds are forecast to continue throughout today and into tomorrow. To help minimize the amount of blowing recyclables, residents are asked to please hold onto your blue boxes until the morning of your collection (7 a.m. set-out time), instead of placing them out the night before. If the weather doesn’t improve, a better option is to hold onto your recycling for next week, if possible.
In addition to the above, here are some general tips to help avoid blowing recyclables:
• Do not over-fill blue boxes;
• Place paper and flattened cardboard sideways in your “Fibre and Plastic Film” box, rather than piling upwards;
• Place lighter materials (e.g. put clear plastic trays underneath heavier steel and glass containers).
Remember to write your address on your blue boxes, so they can be identified if they blow away. Replacement blue boxes are available for a $3 fee at City Hall, 500 George St. N., the Recycling Depot, 390 Pido Rd. (cash only) and GreenUP, 178 Aylmer St.
Unlimited quantities of materials can be dropped off at the 24/7 Recycling Depot, located at 390 Pido Rd.
