Peterborough, ON – Today, Public Notices were placed at Victoria Park to notify of the closure of the park effective Tuesday, August 27.

With the closure of Victoria Park, the City and County of Peterborough are continuing an enforcement process to restore the shared use and the protection of the natural environment as expressed through each municipality’s Parks and Facilities By-Law.

Compliance with each Parks and Facilities By-Law is required.

Victoria Park will re-open after the encampment is gone and the grounds have been restored. Anyone in the park during the temporary closure is trespassing.

Camping in public parks is prohibited without a permit. The only public park in the City that’s designated for camping with a permit is Beavermead Campground.

The health and safety of all involved – people who are living outside and the broader community who use parks – is a priority through this situation.

There are services available for any person who might need assistance. Outreach workers in Victoria Park are identifiable in their yellow t-shirts.

Over the last six weeks, outreach workers have regularly engaged with people who have set up tents in Victoria Park to try to connect any person who might need assistance with available services, including housing services and shelters.

Since the passing of the Parks and Facilities By-Laws by the City and County Councils, outreach workers have been in Victoria Park from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Each month, the City and its partner agencies connect about 15 people with housing who were homeless or in shelters.

For anyone who might need assistance, the City and community partner agencies opened 30 overflow shelter beds last month, bringing the total number of shelter beds up to 110. Over the last month, there has been an average of about 30 beds available each night.

Beyond shelter beds, there are other services available to help with housing and shelter depending on circumstances, such as emergency financial assistance for first and last month’s rent or staying in temporary accommodations.
