Update: skating on the canal

Canal view through Liftlock wrought iron window

The City of Peterborough maintains the ice surface for skating on the canal below the Peterborough Lift Lock as weather conditions permit. A safety flag identifies if ice conditions are safe:

  • A green flag indicates skating is permitted.

  • A red flag indicates skating is not permitted.

The safety flag is currently red - skating is not permitted.

Please obey the safety flag and always use caution when skating on the canal. Ice conditions outdoors are usually rougher than we experience in arenas, and conditions can change quickly.

Our Public Works team consistently monitors ice thickness on the canal throughout the season to assess if conditions are safe for public skating. This season the ice has not yet reached sufficient thickness due to fluctuating weather patterns.

Public Health Guidelines during COVID-19

The City of Peterborough continues to work closely with Peterborough Public Health to provide guidelines for safe use of outdoor spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic. Capacity limits are posted for the three rink areas at the canal.

  • Self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19. Stay home if you are sick.
  • Maintain physical distancing of at least 2 metres (6 feet) from those outside of your household.
  • Organized play, such as pick-up hockey games, broom ball or ringette, are prohibited. Neighbourhood rinks are for casual recreational use only.
  • Wearing a mask or face covering is recommended.
  • Follow the maximum capacity that is posted for the rink. If the rink has reached its posted capacity limit, return at another time.
  • Downloading the Government of Canada’s COVID Alert app to your phone is encouraged.
  • All children and dependents must be accompanied by a competent adult or guardian.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • Do not block driveways or street access.
  • Rinks are operated by volunteers.
  • Wash or sanitize hands before and after visiting.
  • Use at your own risk.
