Tree planting project in Kiwanis Community Park
Peterborough, ON – The City of Peterborough will plant 620 new trees in Kiwanis Community Park, 234 Middlefield Rd., this fall thanks to Tree Canada and the LCBO, as part of Tree Canada’s Community Tree Grant program, and the Trees 4 Peterborough initiative that includes contributions from RBC Dominion Securities, the Excelsior Group, Peterborough Homes, and Merritt Home Hardware.
The Rotary Club of Peterborough, Peterborough GreenUp, and Otonabee Conservation are also supporting this project to enhance the City’s urban forest canopy.
A diversity of native tree species will be planted at the park to replace approximately 400 dead or dying Ash trees that succumbed to Emerald Ash Borer. The removal of the dead or dying Ash trees, along with understory vegetation that is predominantly invasive Buckthorn, was completed last month.
A community tree planting event will be held in the park on September 21, 2024; more details are available on City’s website at peterborough.ca/trees, including a way to volunteer to participate in the tree planting event.
