Peterborough, ON - A survey on the potential re-design of the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre changerooms is open from March 26 to April 22, 2021 with the results going to City Council for direction on the project.

Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre is planning to replace its specialized Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system, replace deficient plumbing, and review the design of changeroom spaces to improve overall accessibility for users.

The City is asking the community on its preference on communal, gender-specific group change spaces – men’s and women’s group changerooms – and private, individual changerooms in a universal changeroom design that is not gender-specific.

A universal changeroom layout with private, individual changerooms would enhance privacy, accessibility, gender-inclusivity, and safety, as well as support operational needs, such as reducing disruption to members during cleaning of changerooms.

The survey and project information are available at the Wellness Centre at 775 Brealey Dr., online at connectptbo.ca/pswcreno, and by calling the Wellness Centre at 705-742-0050.

Copies of the survey are being mailed to Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre members who have not provided an email address for corresponding with the Wellness Centre – anyone else who would like a copy mailed to them can contact the Wellness Centre at 705-742-0050 ext. 2202 or email sportandwellnesscentre@peterborough.ca.

The Wellness Centre currently has three main group changerooms – a men’s communal changeroom, a women’s communal changeroom, and a universal changeroom.

A draft design has outlined how the three existing group changerooms could be replaced by a universal changeroom design with about 40 private, individual changerooms of varying sizes, including about 12 with showers.

Through the first phase of consultation, feedback included concerns with removing the group, communal, gender-specific changerooms and with safety related to private, individual changerooms in a universal change room design that is not gender specific. City Council decided to proceed with a second consultation phase.

Survey results will be reported to Council for its direction on the design of the change rooms at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre.
