Peterborough, ON - Simcoe Parking Garage will be closed from Monday, June 28, 2021 until the fall for scheduled rehabilitation work on the parking garage and the culvert over Jackson Creek that runs under the garage.

Customers who have parking permits to park at Simcoe Parking Garage can use their parking permits at the King Street Parkade on King Street between George and Aylmer streets. The parking permit proximity cards for Simcoe Parking Garage will automatically work at the King Street Parkade during the rehabilitation work on the Simcoe Garage.

During the rehabilitation project, customers who normally use the Simcoe Parking Garage are encouraged to use other parking space that is available in surface parking lots throughout the downtown area as well as the King Street Parkade. A map of publicly available parking lots is available at peterborough.ca/parking.

With the temporary closure of the Simcoe Parking Garage, there are approximately 1,490 publicly available parking spaces in parking lots, garages, as well as on-street in the downtown area. Other private parking options are also available to serve downtown customers. The City will monitor parking demand and usage during the closure to ensure that capacity remains available.

To support curbside pickup, there are designated 15-minute free parking spaces available throughout the downtown.

Parking is free evenings after 6 p.m. and on weekends and statutory holidays. The first hour of parking is free at the King Street Parkade.

Simcoe Parking Garage was built in 1974 and last went through a major rehabilitation program between 2002 and 2005. A structural review in 2013 identified the need for repairs, and the first phase of this was completed in 2016.  An updated structural review in 2017 confirmed the second phase of repair work to replace the waterproofing system and repair deteriorated concrete.

The work has been scheduled to coordinate with the rehabilitation of the Jackson Creek Culvert under the Simcoe Parking Garage. The timing for the work is also restricted due to environmental considerations associated with the presence of the creek under the parking garage.

The contractor on the project confirmed the schedule and details for the work on Wednesday, June 16.

The $6-million rehabilitation project for the garage and the culvert was approved through the City’s 2021 Capital Budget.
