Peterborough – The City of Peterborough is repairing roads across the city, sealing pavement cracks and patching potholes as spring approaches and temperatures rise.

Road repairs will take place in various locations across the city.

Fineline Markings Inc. was awarded the contract to route and seal cracks in the asphalt pavement surface. This work is tentatively scheduled to begin at the end of March and is expected to be finished by fall 2025.

There are no scheduled road closures at this time, but traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on collector and arterial roadways and reduced to one lane with the use of flagging operations on local streets during pavement crack sealing work.

City Public Works crews are currently working to patch potholes when weather conditions permit.

Potholes usually happen in the spring when water gets below the road surface through cracks in the pavement. That water expands when it freezes, increasing the size of the crack. The repeated freeze/thaw cycle of the spring weather weakens the pavement, and the weight of vehicles on weakened areas causes the surface of the road to deteriorate, creating potholes.

Motorists are asked to use caution, reduce speed and exercise patience when approaching road maintenance crews. Leave a safe distance for crews to complete their work.

Residents can report potholes by using an online form at peterborough.ca/reportanissue, or by calling 705-745-1386.

Half-load restrictions on commercial vehicles are in place until April 30, 2025 to help protect roadways from damage during the spring thaw.
