Retirement of Airport Administrator Nancy Hewitt

full bike rack

Nancy Hewitt has decided it is time to retire to spend more time with her family. It is difficult to capture a true picture of a lifetime of dedication to the Peterborough Airport and the aviation community both locally and across Ontario. Nancy has spent a lifetime on the airport starting as a child flying with her parents on many trips and then later started working on the airport as a student in the restaurant from 1972 to 1978.

She later returned to the airport in 1990 and has worked in various roles for various firms since that time. In 2012 Nancy was hired by the City of Peterborough to fill the position as Airport Administrator. Few airport leaders get to experience redeveloping an airport over their career, but Nancy has played an instrumental role over the last eleven years in the ongoing progress of the airport. Through all the excitement, progress, and various expansions she has represented the City of Peterborough to ensure the compliance of the airport.

Nancy sat on the Board of Directors for the Airport Management Council of Ontario for nine years assisting the safety and progress of many airports across Ontario. It is important to point out some of the highlights and progress the Airport has experienced in which Nancy played a role:

  •  2008 industrial lands development project
  • Streamlined building process for tenants
  • 2010 Airport expansion including a lengthened and strengthened runway
  • Three terminal moves during expansion transitions
  • 2013 attraction of Seneca College
  • Crosswind runway expansion and paving
  • Restaurant operator tender process
  • Representing Peterborough Airport at several tradeshows
  • RFP process for the Airport’s FBO
  • Several capital and building processes
  • Property acquisitions east of the Otonabee River
  • Several Obstacle Limitation Surface tree removal projects
  • 50th Anniversary Air Show Committee contributions
  • Wayfinding signage program

Although I have missed several of Nancy’s undertakings the highlighted projects demonstrate her dedication to the airport and even further to the aviation community. While the projects and progress have had positive results, her job at times has been
very difficult; trying to accommodate the needs of many while navigating regulations, municipal bylaws, agreements, and Council’s level of service. She showed up everyday and put the best interests of airport tenants, guests, and users of the airport first.

Nancy’s last day of work will be February 19, 2021 and given the current pandemic unfortunately there will be no send-off, but best wishes are welcomed via e-mail. In the interim I will be continuing to fill in for Nancy, should you have any questions or
concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

So long Nancy, be well, and best wishes with your next chapter.
