Pride Month in Peterborough

Mayor Jeff Leal has issued the following statement for Pride Month:

I am extremely pleased to proclaim Pride Month in Peterborough during the month of June, when we honour the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, celebrate diversity and inclusion, and reaffirm our commitment to equality and human rights.

Pride Month is more than just a celebration; it is a powerful reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in their ongoing fight for acceptance and equal rights. It is a time to reflect on the progress that has been achieved, while also recognizing the work that still needs to be done to ensure that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can live freely and without fear of discrimination. Discrimination, homophobia, and transphobia continue to hurt members of our community.

Peterborough is a city that values diversity and inclusivity. Let’s take time to celebrate our 2SLGBTQIA+ community and their invaluable contributions to the social, cultural and economic life of our city. We can all learn from their courage and resilience as we work towards a more equitable and inclusive community.

In Peterborough, Peterborough-Nogojiwanong Pride organizes Pride Week events in September – this year it will take place from September 20 to 29. I encourage residents to visit peterboroughpride.ca and to watch for updates on local Pride Week events in September.

While we celebrate Pride Week locally in September, communities and organizations across Canada celebrate Pride at various times from June to September, with some of the major celebrations taking place in June.

As we celebrate Pride Month, let us also remember the importance of being allies in our daily lives. It is our collective responsibility to stand against prejudice and discrimination, to support 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, and to create safe and inclusive spaces for all.
